Volunteer and Internship Guidelines
CTPL hosts both volunteers and interns through bilateral arrangements with academic institutions or through the Canadian Federal Governments Graduate Students' Exchange Program. To qualify students must demonstrate interest in the field of international trade, international law, and trade related subjects and posses university-level or post-graduate education and experience in a related field. Both the Volunteer and Intern positions are designed to be of mutual benefit: volunteers/interns learn about CTPL’s work while building personal capacities and experience, and the Centre receives valuable assistance towards achieving its projects and goals.
The Centre coordinates volunteer/intern positions with the academic year: September - December (Fall); January – April (Spring); and May - August (Summer).
VOLUNTEERS
CTPL accepts a limited number of volunteers annually depending on program needs. These positions are un-paid. Volunteers must be willing to commit to a work programme of at least 10 hours per week. Positions may include ongoing program related support or project-related assignments. CTPL also recruits volunteers on an on going basis for assistance during conference and workshops.
INTERNSHIPS
Student Exchange Interns: Graduate Students' Exchange Program - CTPL hosts Interns depending on available funding and program needs. In exceptional cases CTPL can provide limited support in the form of a monthly stipend for basic living expenses, but interns should have sponsorship and funding from their sponsoring institutions. Positions may be within one program or across several programs. Ideally, Interns must be willing to commit to a work program of at least 35 hours per week. Interns require either Canadian citizenship or a valid Canadian work permit. In the past CTPL has hosted a number of students from the University of West Indies, Barbados (Cavehill Campus from the International Trade Policy Program through the Graduate Students’s Exchange Program.
Research Interns: Periodically CTPL recruits graduate students to aid in various research programs and/or training courses. In the past, Research Interns have worked at the Centre full time for one academic term or have committed to working a minimum of 10 hours a week for a mutually agreed upon period of time.
If you are representing an academic institution CTPL accepts expressions of interest from institutions who may wish to place interns with CTPL. Applications must include individuals’ qualifications, curriculum vitae, and a writing sample. Included in the above should be applicant’s work / educational experience, language ability and any other information deemed relevant to the position. Organisations wishing to place volunteers or interns should contact CTPL at least three months before the start of the hosting period. Interns and volunteers are expected to produce a final report on their experience for CTPL and the sponsoring institution. CTPL is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applications from qualified women and men. --
