China: The Auto Policy and WTO Project 1999–2000

This policy assistance project was a sub-project of a Public Policy Options Project (PPOP) executed by the Conference Board of Canada and financed by CIDA. The overall objective of this project was to strengthen the capacity of Chinese automotive sector policy makers in formulating and implementing WTO-consistent industrial policies. The project completed the following activities: intensive information exchange; two auto study tours in Canada for senior Chinese officials; auto policy training and advisory seminars in China for Chinese participants; and joint interviews in China with government officials responsible for related issues. The project produced a comprehensive auto policy options report with some key recommendations and organized a policy symposium in China to disseminate the project findings and recommendations. Our China project partner was the State Council's Development Research Center (CDRC).
